Star Wars X-Wing….Are you a fan? This game has grown in popularity since it’s birth in 2012 at Gen Con. The game features tactical ship-to-ship dogfighting between different factions of the Star Wars Universe. Fantasy Flight describes the game as: “”X-Wing is a tactical ship-to-ship combat game in which players take control of powerful Rebel X-wing fighters and nimble Imperial TIE fighters, facing them against each other in fast-paced space combat. Featuring stunningly detailed and painted miniatures, X-Wing recreates exciting Star Wars space combat throughout its several included scenarios. Select your crew, plan your maneuvers, and complete your mission! The X-Wing starter set includes everything you need to begin your battles, such as scenarios, cards, and fully assembled and painted ships. What’s more, X-Wing’s quick-to-learn ruleset establishes the foundation for a system that can be expanded with your favorite ships and characters from the Star Wars universe.”
At the official release of Star Wars X-Wing fans were delighted with stunning prepainted miniatures, easy to follow instructions, and interchangeable fleets. As of today, the game has grown substantially to now hold roughly 67 different ship purchase options! This stunning array of options has come from the ever-popular Star Wars movie and Rebels animated line. The ships and pilots’ fans admire on screen can now be played on the table. Choose your faction, choose your ship, choose your pilot! The game is also a fan favorite for the more “mature” gamer, with its planning, executing of moves, and finally the combat. Now, don’t let that scare you off, this is also a great family game as you are actively talking and playing, encouraging good sportsmanship, and pushing the use of forward thinking.
Why should a casual gamer or even a novice jump on the “Millennium Falcon” of miniature games? Easy! The options are endless for this game, the miniatures require no extra maintenance or painting, it’s quick to learn, and most FLGS’s host great events for the game. The Geek Boom offers both quarterly tournaments, Store Championship, and a League.
Quarterly Tournaments are great for the slightly more competitive and casual player alike. The prize support from FFG is always changing with alternate art cards and special acrylic or metal tokens. The Store Championship is where the “Big Dogs” come to show off their piloting skill. The top prize? A BYE at the Regional Qualifier! The League however is great for everyone. This is the chance for both brand new and veteran pilots to come in and test their builds. It’s less competitive and very relaxed. Prizes? Yes, there are prizes too! Store credit and bragging rights to the top three victors!
